Coccaglio is a municipality with 8795 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Brescia in the Italian region of Lombardy . The neighboring communities are Castrezzato , Chiari , Cologne , Erbusco and Rovato .
Bronze Age finds and a Gallo-Celtic grave are evidence of early settlement. The medieval wall follows the plan of a Roman castrum . Coccaglio was on the "new road" between Brescia and Bergamo attested at the beginning of the 13th century . In 1326 the place came under the rule of Azzo Visconti . In 1426 Coccaglio came to the continental territories of the Serenissima , from which it received several tax privileges. In May 1509, Louis XII. in the village of Feldlager, in March 1528 the mercenaries of Duke Heinrich II of Braunschweig marched here . The madrigal composer Luca Marenzio was most likely born here in 1553. The Franciscan Andrea Manente († 1684), author of a Vita of Saint Faustinus and a history of the Venetian enterprises in the Byzantine Empire, as well as the Capuchins Bonaventure (1713–1778) and Viatore Bianchi (1706–1793) also came from Coccaglio . During the Second Italian War of Independence , the Austrians withdrew from Coccaglio on June 11, 1859, and Garibaldi entered the village the following day.
In a Venetian report from 1610 1,800 inhabitants are noted. Since the 1991 census with 6501 inhabitants, the population has shown a steadily growing trend. 30% of the residents are in dependent employment, of which around 75% are with employers in the municipality, the majority in the manufacturing sector.
A rail link to Brescia was established in 1854, and the extension to Bergamo followed in 1857.
