Giovanni Pietro Berti

Giovanni Pietro Berti (* around 1590; † 1638 in Venice ) was a Venetian composer , organist and singer of the Baroque.

Life

Giovanni Pietro Berti received his training as a boy soprano at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice, later he was employed at the local chapel under Claudio Monteverdi as a tenor with a salary of 70 ducats. On September 16, 1624 he received the post of second organist at St. Mark's Basilica, in this position he remained until his death. He was succeeded by Francesco Cavalli .

Berti was one of the composers who first used the term "cantada" (cantata), but here he does not describe the form of recitative and aria, as was common 30 years later, but a variety of sung text passages and instrumental rituals .
