Live and act

Little is known about Giovanni Lorenzo Gregori, who worked in Lucca throughout his life. In 1684 he was one of the founding members of the "Luccheser Musikbruderschaft". From 1688 to 1692 he was Kapellmeister of the palace chapel. The music for his oratorios and passion music is considered lost. Gregori was one of the first composers to use the term Concerto grosso as the title of a concert collection whose 10 concertos are mostly four movements and based on the model of the trio sonata. In addition to his compositions, he wrote two theoretical works, Il canto fermo in pratica (1697) and his Il principianti di musica , which appeared in five editions (around 1735).
