The Schmittenhöhe is a mountain with a height of 1965 m above sea level. A. on the eastern edge of the Kitzbühel Alps .
It is the local mountain of the district capital Zell am See , from where a cable car, built by Adolf Bleichert & Co. in 1927 and meanwhile renovated several times, leads to the summit. You have a view of over 30 three-thousand-meter peaks as well as Lake Zell , the valley basin and the Saalachtal .
Sports
The Schmittenhöhe has slopes for winter sports. Many cross-country flights with the paraglider start from the Schmittenhöhe into the Pinzgau, which enables long flights due to its east-west orientation and its straight course.
Elisabeth Chapel
In 1904 the Elisabeth Chapel was built in memory of the Empress Elisabeth (called Sisi) . However, the consecration did not take place until September 10, 1908, the 10th anniversary of the Empress' death. It is officially consecrated to Saint Elizabeth of Thuringia . Sisi actually climbed the Schmittenhöhe.
Hotel fire
On October 28, 2008, a fire broke out in the Berghotel Schmittenhöhe, located directly at the mountain station, which, mainly due to its exposed location, quickly developed into a major fire in which almost the entire hotel was destroyed. 14 fire brigades from the area fought the flames for 10 hours.
Cable car extension
Schmittenhöhe-Bahn AG would like to offer more ski slopes in a higher location. The Hochsonnberg lift project has been contested since December 2010, the last time it was rejected by the Administrative Court in January 2020.
