Josef Pembaur the Elder
Josef Pembaur the Elder (born May 23, 1848 in Innsbruck ; † February 19, 1923 there ) was an Austrian conductor , composer and music teacher .
Life
The son of a civil servants and council studied Jus at the University of Innsbruck , but then turned to music and studied at the Vienna Conservatory with Anton Bruckner composition and organ, and at the Munich Conservatory with Josef Gabriel Rheinberger music theory and organ, and also in case Giuseppe Buonamici , Franz Wüllner and Julius Hey . In Munich he made friends with Peter Cornelius .
In 1874 he succeeded Matthäus Nagiller as director of the Innsbruck Musikverein and ensured a boom in Innsbruck's musical life. Pembaur directed an orchestral association he founded and the academic services in the Jesuit Church , the Academic Choral Society, the Innsbrucker Liedertafel and the Tyrolean Choir Association, which he brought back to life in 1881. He founded a mixed choir for annual performances of oratorios .
At the Musikverein's school he taught solo singing, piano, music theory and, at times, the organ. His students included Ludwig Thuille , Vinzenz Goller , Anton Schmutzer , Hartmann von An der Lan-Hochbrunn , Josef Prantl , Martin Spörr and Josef Eduard Ploner . He pushed through better pay for teachers, which enabled him to attract better teachers and raise the school's reputation. In 1912 he managed to get the Musikverein, which had previously used various inadequate rooms, its own building, today's Tyrolean State Conservatory .
As a composer, Pembaur created a symphony , an opera , oratorios, one German and eight Latin masses , a requiem , marches, piano music, chamber music, 56 male choirs, seven mixed choirs and around 70 songs. His male choirs have been performed not only in Europe but also in America. While he showed interest in modern music as a conductor, as a composer he remained a post-romanticist influenced by Robert Schumann . He also published a number of treatises and essays, especially in the annual reports of the school of the Innsbruck Music Association.
Private
His sons Josef and Karl also became musicians, his son Walter became a politician.
