Martin Spörr (born October 16, 1866 in Wilten , † September 2, 1937 in Gallspach ) was an Austrian musician , conductor and composer .

Life

Martin Spörr was born in 1866 as the son of the shoemaker of the same name and Maria Schindl in Wilten, now a district of Innsbruck . His musical talent was already encouraged in elementary school; from 1875 he learned French horn, trombone and double bass at the school of the Innsbruck Music Association , among others with Joseph Friedrich Hummel and Josef Pembaur the Elder , and then at the Vienna Conservatory with Robert Fuchs . From 1883 to 1885 he was horn player in the orchestra of the Innsbruck City Theater , from 1885 to 1888 military musician and from 1888 to 1892 double bass player at the city theater. In addition, he taught brass instruments and double bass at the Musikverein school from 1888 to 1899.

For the musical entertainment at the first Tyrolean provincial exhibition in 1893, he put together an orchestra of 27 men on behalf of the local council. It was then converted into a municipal orchestra, today's Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra Innsbruck , and led by Spörr until 1899, when he was appointed director of the newly founded Graz Symphony Orchestra. In 1902 he succeeded August Labitzkys as music director of the Philharmonic Orchestra in Karlsbad , which was enlarged in response to his efforts and organized "Philharmonic concerts" from the 1903 winter season. In 1903/04 he also conducted the spa orchestra in Baden .

In 1905, alongside Ferdinand Löwe, he became permanent conductor of the orchestra of the Wiener Concertverein, today's Wiener Symphoniker , which he conducted at symphony concerts at the Wiener Musikverein and in the Volksgarten , and in the summer months from 1906 to 1918 at the spa concerts in Bad Kissingen . From 1922 to 1932 he was the administrative director of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, which he founded, an association of musicians from the Vienna Tonkünstler Orchestra and the Vienna Concert Association. Until 1932 he conducted the summer concerts in Vienna's Burggarten , otherwise only on a temporary basis.

Martin Spörr was also active as an organizer, in particular as head of the “Vindobona” concert management. As a composer he created, among other things, an opera about the life of the Fiechter abbot Cölestin Böhm , a mystery play , symphonies , small orchestral pieces, piano music, marches, dances and songs, including settings from Des Knaben Wunderhorn . However, his work was not a success. As a conductor, he has directed premieres and premieres of numerous contemporary works.
