The Dicks are an American punk band from Austin , Texas .

history

The Dicks were founded in 1980 by singer Gary Floyd, guitarist Glen Taylor, bassist and singer Buxf Parrott and drummer Pat Deason. Her debut single Hate the Police was released in the same year . After concerts with other underground musicians like MDC , The Offenders or The Big Boys , they released a live split LP with the latter on Rat Race Records . In 1983 Floyd moved from Austin to San Francisco , where he re-formed the Dicks with guitarist Tim Carorroll, bassist Sebastian Fuchs and drummer Lynn Perko from the band The Wrecks . In this new line-up, they recorded a studio album entitled Kill from the Heart for the underground label SST Records . It includes a cover version of Jimi Hendrix 's Purple Haze . Then they switched to Jello Biafra's label Alternative Tentacles , on which the LP These People appeared. The production was done by Klaus Flouride from the Dead Kennedys . In 1986 The Dicks broke up. The band members turned to solo projects from then on, like something Gary Floyd from his group Sister Double Happiness .

In 2004 the band reunited, and since then they have played concerts again and released new material at irregular intervals. In 2015, a documentary and a tribute album entitled The Dicks from Texas and Friends to the band was released.

In October 2016, the group retired after a farewell concert in Austin.

The Seattle- based grunge band Mudhoney covered the Dicks song Hate the Police for their EP Boiled Beef & Rotting Teeth in 1988 and have played the song live since then.

style

Musically, The Dicks play classic American punk and hardcore punk . On her second LP you can also hear influences from blues rock .

Lyrically, the band's songs are often about social problems, homophobia , discrimination , police violence and the middle class.
