Siegfried Mazagg, around 1930

Siegfried Mazagg (born February 12, 1902 in Pfalzen ; † June 13, 1932 in Innsbruck ) was a Tyrolean architect , draftsman and caricaturist .

overview

The contemporary of Clemens Holzmeister , Lois Welzenbacher and Franz Baumann planned single-family houses, dealt with the topic of “ apartments for the subsistence level ”, realized public buildings and created key works in the field of tourism construction. In this area he realized projects that show the interpenetration of architecture and the alpine landscape.

Life

Mazagg was born in 1902 in Pfalzen in South Tyrol, but his family lived in Innsbruck from the end of the First World War at the latest, where he attended the state trade school, construction department. Clemens Holzmeister (1886–1983) and Lois Welzenbacher (1889–1955) were his teachers at this training facility for a short time. After his school days at the beginning of the 1920s, Mazagg attempted to gain a foothold as a visual artist, but failed in the eyes of criticism at the time. He then began as a young architect and prevailed in competition proceedings against prominent competitors such as his former teachers Clemens Holzmeister and Lois Welzenbacher as well as his friend Franz Baumann. He gained first notoriety during an informal process for the design of the high-rise buildings of the Achensee power plant in Jenbach (1926, still as an employee of the construction company Innerebner & Mayer) and a later project for a mountain hotel on the Seegrube (1927).

Soon after winning the second competition, Mazagg went into business for himself and worked on some of his projects in collaboration with the barely documented architect Franz Übelbacher - who, like Mazagg, was an enthusiastic alpinist and was therefore a member of the Karwendler Alpine Club. As a freelance architect, Mazagg quickly gained the reputation of being one of the most promising talents in the Austrian architecture scene. He created a rich oeuvre, especially in the field of tourism construction: count among his most important buildings

  • the renovation of the Hotel Alpenhof in Pertisau am Achensee (1929)
  • the Hotel Berghof in Seefeld in Tirol (1929/1930)
  • the reconstruction of the Hotel Mariabrunn in Innsbruck after a fire (1931/1932) and
  • Pension Bergheim in Berwang including interior design and furnishing with conceptual integration of rural and urban forms of living (1932) and the successful renovation and conversion since 2015.

In connection with these orders, he also implemented comprehensive concepts for the furnishing of hotel halls, dining rooms, bars, etc., which are remarkable in terms of their entirety.

Appreciation

In his work, Mazagg orientated himself on the Austrian homeland security as well as on the newly emerging currents of the 1920s. Without "building culture concerns" ( Friedrich Achleitner ) he succeeded in combining the aesthetic demands of the homeland security with the new formal language of classical modernism. His conservative attitude did not limit his willingness to interpret and, unlike many other architects in the region, he was probably well informed about developments at the Bauhaus in particular . For example, he designed tubular steel furniture for hotel interiors and private apartments at such an early stage that one must assume that his designs wanted to achieve a level of quality that need not shy away from international comparisons. Other architectural details such as doors were inspired by De Stijl .

Mazagg died in a car accident in Innsbruck when he was only 30.
