The Hornbach chain is a 15 km long mountain chain in the Allgäu Alps in Tyrol ( Austria ) .

geography

The Hornbach chain branches off from the Allgäu main ridge at the Öfnerspitze and runs eastwards in an arc that is slightly northward. In the far west, at the Hornbachspitze, a branch branches off to the south, in which the most important peak of the entire chain, the Große Krottenkopf (2656 m), is located. This is also the highest peak in the Allgäu Alps as a whole. In the west, the mountain group can be demarcated along this side branch with a line that extends from Holzgau in the south over the Höhenbachtal and Rossgumpental to Öfnerkar in the north. The boundary of the main branch of the Hornbach chain is formed in the north by the Hornbachtal with the valley town of Hinterhornbach , in the south by the Lech valley from Holzgau to Vorderhornbach , where it joins the Hornbachtal. The easternmost mountain of the group, the Klimmspitze, is located at the point where the two valleys meet . In the main branch of the Hornbach range, the highest peaks are the Marchspitze (2609 m), the Bretterspitze (2608 m) and the Urbeleskarspitze (2632 m), all of which are among the ten most important peaks in the Allgäu Alps.

Geology and character

The predominant rock of the Hornbach range is the brittle, fragile main dolomite . The rocky ridges branching off at right angles from its main ridge are characteristic of the mountain range. These border the numerous, sometimes very large and impressive high cirques , which are particularly pronounced south of the ridge. Many mountains are named after the Karen lying at their feet (e.g. Hermannskarspitze, Kreuzkarspitze, Bretterkarspitze, Sattelkarspitze, Woleckleskarspitze, Gliegerkarspitze, Urbeleskarspitze, Wasserfallkarspitze).

Development

Compared to other mountain groups in the Allgäu Alps, the Hornbach range is less well developed. There are only climbs on a few mountains; accordingly, the peaks, with the exception of the Großer Krottenkopf and Bretterspitze, are also rarely climbed. The well-traveled E5 long-distance hiking trail (section Kemptner Hütte - Holzgau) runs west of the chain . Refuge huts in the western third are the Hermann-von-Barth-Hütte ( 2129  m ) in Wolfebnerkar south of the ridge and further east the Kaufbeurer Haus ( 2007  m ) in Urbeleskar north of the ridge . The two huts are connected by the Enzenspergerweg (named after the mountaineer Josef Enzensperger ).

List of peaks

The most important peaks in the main ridge of the Hornbach range are (from west to east):

The side branch, which branches off to the south at the Hornbachspitze - i.e. in the extreme west of the Hornbach chain - includes the following peaks:
