The Urbeleskarspitze is a 2632 m high peak in the Allgäu Alps . It is located in Austria in the federal state of Tyrol and represents the fifth highest peak in the Allgäu Alps and the second highest peak in the Hornbach chain . Neighboring peaks in the Hornbach chain are the Bretterspitze in the southwest and the Zwölferspitze in the northeast.

Rock and structure

Like most of the high peaks in the Allgäu Alps, the Urbeleskarspitze consists of main dolomite . The summit has a distinctive bell-shaped shape and can be easily recognized from the north as well as from the south of neighboring and distant peaks.

First ascent

Who has climbed the Urbeleskarspitze for the first time cannot be precisely traced. Unknown locals or Dr. Gümbel in question in 1854. The ascent from 1869 by Hermann von Barth is secured .

Valley locations / bases

The main base is the village of Hinterhornbach in a side valley of the Tyrolean Lech Valley . From there it takes about 2.5 hours to climb to the Kaufbeurer Haus , a self-catering hut owned by the DAV . The hut is regularly manned on weekends from Pentecost to the beginning of October and otherwise only accessible to members of the Alpine Club with a key.

Ascent

There is no easy climb to the summit of the Urbeleskarspitze, the two common routes from the Kaufbeurer Haus require sure-footedness , a head for heights and alpine experience in each case.

The only partially marked normal route leads in alpine difficulty UIAA II + in just under 2 hours through steep craggy terrain over the northwest flank to the summit.

There is an alternative ascent via the north ridge and, with alpine difficulty UIAA II, leads through brittle rock in 2 hours to the Urbeleskarspitze.
