Hermann Freiherr von Barth-Harmating (born June 5, 1845 at Eurasburg Castle , † December 7, 1876 in São Paulo de Luanda , Angola ) was a well-known mountaineer .

origin

His parents were Anton Melchior von Barth (born November 25, 1815) and his wife Flora von Krauss . His mother was a daughter of the Bavarian State Councilor Baron von Krauss (born May 4, 1822) and granddaughter of the Bavarian general and Minister of War Johann Nepomuk Joseph Florian von Triva (1755-1827). His brother Ernst (1849-1934) was a Bavarian infantry general, his twin brother Hugo (1849-1935) was major general.

Life

First he studied law in Munich , where he joined the Corps Franconia in 1864 . As a legal intern (today legal trainee ) he began from Berchtesgaden in 1868 to explore the still largely undeveloped Berchtesgaden Alps . From 1873 he studied natural sciences .

Von Barth is best known as the developer of the Karwendel , he climbed 88 peaks as a soloist in the summer of 1870 (12 for the first time, including the Birkkarspitze , Kaltwasserkarspitze , Lalidererspitze , Große Seekarspitze , Grubenkarspitze , Dreizinkenspitze , Östliche Karwendelspitze , Vogelkarspitze , Wörner , Kuhkopf ). In 1871 he moved to the Wetterstein Mountains and climbed many peaks there for the first time. He had already explored the Allgäu Alps in 1869 and climbed 44 peaks, three of which were the first ascent. It was characteristic that von Barth was mostly traveling alone. In 1874 he published the book Aus den Nördliche Kalkalpen , in which he documented his experiences and tours. In the Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie it can be read that “ his monograph [...] [helped] a real deficiency. You can see from it that the author, like few, was capable of the difficult tasks of a high tourist [...] even if a lot has happened since then for the exploration of that mountain range [...], one always becomes Barth's name as that of the pioneer and scouts have to honor. "

In 1876 he committed on a research trip in Africa , confused by a fever disease, suicide .

Names of geographical objects attest to Hermann von Barth's merits for the development of the Northern Limestone Alps: Barthgrat (transition from the Großer Katzenkopf to the Middle Jägerkarspitze ( III ), Karwendel, first ascent in 1870 by von Barth single-handedly unsecured), Barthspitze (Karwendel, named in his honor) and Barthkamin ( Risser Falk , Karwendel, first ascent in 1870 by von Barth). The secured climb from the Meilerhütte to the Partenkirchener Dreitorspitze is also called Hermann-von-Barth-Weg. The Hermann-von-Barth-Hütte of the German Alpine Club is a refuge in the Allgäu Alps.

The Hermann von Barth monument is located in the Kleiner Ahornboden in the Karwendel.
