From the Northern Limestone Alps is a classic of alpine literature that was published in 1874 by Hermann von Barth . In the subtitle of the book, the author describes his ascents and experiences in the mountains of Berchtesgaden Alps , the Allgäu , and above all large parts of the Karwendel with many first ascents north of the Inn valley, the Isar source area and in the Wetterstein .

content

In the Berchtesgaden Alps, von Barth climbed the southern Watzmannspitze , the Schönfeldspitze in the Steinerne Meer , the Göll chain , the Hochkönig , peaks of the Reitalm , the Hocheisspitze and parts of the Hagengebirge . In the Allgäu he was able to climb the peaks of the Tannheimer Berge , the Hochvogel , the Trettachspitze on the Mädelegabel , the Hohe Licht , the Krottenköpf and the Urbeleskarspitze in the Hornbach chain . From his ascents in the Karwendel he describes, among other things, those of the Hohen Brandjoch near Innsbruck , the Speckkarspitze in the Hallthaler chain , the Lamsenspitze in the Stallental and the Oberen Platte in the Mieminger Mountains .

Motivation and form

In the preface from August 1874, von Barth explains that he originally intended to write a pure alpine and tourist guide for the Northern Limestone Alps, which he knew and researched . Also at the suggestion of the publishing company, he filled gaps in the coverage of the areas with further hikes and mountain climbs and described his own experiences while climbing the peaks. It was his concern to give a clear picture of the whole mountain group along with certain additional orographic and alpine information. He also contributed some self-made drawings of mountain views to show summit shapes and their ascents.
