The crag (related to craggy ) is a term from the mountaineering language that denotes steep, rocky terrain interspersed with grass and often also with scree. Almost only the plural is used. In the Schrofen area, it is only possible to progress with difficulty, as steps and ledges are partly present, but there is usually no continuous route. Crags are mainly found where the rock has been broken up against its direction of fall .

When alpine hiking trails lead through Schrofen terrain, the trails often only consist of color markings that show the most favorable course in more or less detail. The ascent requires surefootedness and alpine experience; Depending on the steepness of the terrain, you can use your hands to help, there may also be climbing points in the first degree . In the SAC hiking scale , Schrofen terrain mostly falls into the medium-difficult categories T3 or T4, steep Schrofen terrain is rated T5 and difficult terrain T6. On designated hiking trails, rugged areas are often defused with steps, handles or ropes. When wet, the Schrofen terrain is particularly dangerous due to the increased risk of slipping, especially when descending. In addition, the existing risk of falling in the Schrofen area is typically underestimated.

The word is certainly of Tyrolean origin, there are over 40  toponyms on -schrofen / -schröfen in Tyrol (inventory of the Austrian map), more than 10 in Vorarlberg, under 10 in Bavaria (official map), one in the province of Salzburg. It is missing in South Tyrol (inventory of the official map), as is the rest of the Alpine region. While the word in the core area invariably referred steep slopes, rock barrier and some ridges ( field names ), it is also found as part of the name of several mountains in the Northern Limestone Alps (z. B. Sorgschrofen ).
