The tuff quarry Weissenbronnen is a nature reserve designated by the Tübingen regional council on March 27, 1990 by ordinance in the area of the municipality of Wolfegg in the district of Ravensburg . The nature reserve is part of the Altdorfer Wald FFH area
location
The Weissenbronnen tuff quarry is located around 2.5 km northwest of the center of Wolfegger near the hamlet of Weißenbronnen on the left of the Wolfegger Ach . The area belongs to the Upper Swabian hill country natural area .
Protection purpose
According to the ordinance, the protection purpose is "in addition to the preservation of the area as a geological, hydrogeological and cultural-historical monument, namely as a very rare example of mighty tuff formations in the young moraine land and their usage history in stages of different intensity, in particular the protection of the extremely valuable, mosaic-like communities of plants and animals in spring moor, in mining areas and in spring streams. "
Landscape character
The protected area is an abandoned tuff quarry with a wall up to 10 meters high, in which tuff has been mined since the Middle Ages. The Weißenbronn tuff was used, among other things, for the construction of the St. Martin Basilica in Weingarten. The dismantling stopped in 1965. Parts of the area are now forested. In the south of the protected area is the rest of a hillside spring moor. Due to numerous spring outlets, very dry and wet locations alternate on a small scale, which has led to a particularly diverse range of species in the area.
Flora and fauna
The notable species in the area include, among others, the horned orchid , the Pyrenean spoonwort , the black-violet columbine , the green and the brown striped fern , the mosquito-hendelwort , the marsh stendelwort and the violet stendelwort .
