location
The 16 hectare large nature reserve Krottental-Karbach is one natural area to Westallgäuer hills . It is located about 3.5 kilometers northwest of downtown Wangen, west of the “Wangen-West” motorway junction , between the hamlets of Hagmühle, Untermatzen, Krottental and Grünenberg, at an altitude of 560 m above sea level. NN . In the land maps, these districts are designated as Leupolz (to Wangen) and Amtzell (to Amtzell).
The nature reserve, which is two kilometers long in north-south direction, is traversed by the Karbach , a tributary of the Lower Argen . The valley is part of an old drainage channel that ran from the former Wurzacher See - today's Wurzacher Ried - to the Untere Argen between the last two ice ages . A tongue of the Rhine glacier moved north in this channel during the Würme Ice Age .
Protection purpose
The main protection purpose is the preservation - and in part the restoration - of a near-natural, pre-alpine floodplain, characterized by extensive meadow use, the high ecological value of which lies in the combination of different humid biotopes that are the habitat of a species-rich , characteristic flora and fauna. The protection purpose also includes, for example, the protection of a body of water in its valley floodplain, the boundary of which is determined by the clear course of the Niedergestades ( recent valley floodplain).
As a typical landscape element in the cultural landscape of Upper Swabia and as a feeding habitat for breeding and resting birds, it forms an important part of the network of Upper Swabian waters and wetlands.
