Protection purpose
The main protection purpose of the nature reserve is the preservation and development of the remains of the fens as a habitat for rare animal and plant species, some of which are threatened with extinction, and as a location for a typical, species-rich meadow flora . In the predominantly agriculturally used, structurally poor environment, the Markdorfer Eisweiher represents a natural retreat for endangered animal species - especially birds , amphibians and insects . With its richly structured mosaic of different wetland types, it is of particular importance as an element in the network of biotopes . Therefore it is especially important. to maintain and improve the coexistence of bodies of water, reed beds, litter meadows, other meadows and woody stands. The biotope function has priority in the nature reserve. Apart from the use of the litter meadow, no agricultural use should take place.
The landscape protection area includes the edge areas and serves to avoid negative influences on the nature reserve due to changes in the environment that are disruptive or impair the natural balance.
