history

Manor in Radwanowice

The clustered village of Vill (am) Radwanowicz was first mentioned in a document in 1329 in the founding privilege of the village of Szklary. It was also reorganized according to German law around that time. The name, which used to be a property-indicating Radwanow in 1400, is patronymically derived from the personal name Radwan (≤ Radowan ≤ Radosław , Radomił and the like) with the typical West Slavic suffix - (ow) ice. According to legend, the village was founded by the knight Radwan from the environment of Duke Bolesław II , who, together with the knight Paczołt (see Paczółtowice ), took part in the murder of St. Stanislaus of Kraków . Some historians link the development of the village with the knightly family from Mazovia , who owned the places in the so-called Radwanite Corridor , south of the Vistula , from the 13th century . The village was clearly older than it was first mentioned: in 1400 Radwanow had already 35 landlords, whose descendants were described by Jan Długosz as impoverished quasi-farmers. This lasted until the end of the 18th century. In the 17th century, some members of the local landlords became robber barons .

When Poland was partitioned for the third time in 1795, Radwanowice became part of the Habsburg Empire . The Austrians took away the titles and diplomas from the majority of the 44 noble families. In the years 1815-1846 the village belonged to the Republic of Krakow , in 1846 it was annexed again as part of the Grand Duchy of Krakow to the countries of the Austrian Empire. From 1855 Radwanowice belonged to the Chrzanów District . The border with Congress Poland ran north of the village (before the village of Szklary). The Austrian military police and tax guards were stationed in Radwanowice.

In 1918, after the end of the First World War and the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Radwanowice became part of Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the Krakow district in the General Government . During the night between July 20 and 21, 1943, the village was attacked by 2,000 members of the SS , military police and the Wehrmacht . In revenge for the activities of the local Home Army , 30 villagers, including the mayor's family, were shot in public. In 1984 the village was honored with the order of Krzyż Walecznych (Battle Cross).

From 1975 to 1998 Radwanowice was part of the Krakow Voivodeship .
