Ballater ( Gaelic : Bealadair ) is a place in Aberdeenshire , Scotland , about 85 kilometers west of Aberdeen in the Scottish Highlands . It is located on the River Dee on the western foothills of the Cairngorm Mountains and the Cairngorms National Park , at an altitude of 123 m. Ballater had 1533 inhabitants in 2011.
Attractions
The Ballater train station, which has been closed since 1966, houses a museum. This shows, among other things, the waiting room of Queen Victoria, who used the Ballater train station on her journey to Balmoral Castle . Much of the station fell victim to a fire in May 2015. The museum was only partially affected.
Balmoral Castle, which is still inhabited by the royal family in summer, is about 14 km to the west and gives the region the name "Royal Deeside". Two kilometers south of Ballater is Birkhall , an estate that is temporarily inhabited by Prince Charles .
The Blue Cairn Circle (also called Balronald Wood) is a Recumbent Stone Circle (RSC) at Ballater.
