The Cairngorms (English The Cairngorms or Cairngorm Mountains , named after the summit Cairn Gorm ; Scottish Gaelic : Am Monadh Ruadh , "the red mountains") is a group of mountains in the Grampian Mountains in north-east Scotland .
Overview
Five of the ten highest mountains in Scotland and Great Britain are located there, with several other peaks over 1000 m, the Cairngorms form the largest high mountain-like mountain group in the entire British Isles , although the significantly smaller Ben Nevis group is a few meters higher. The highest point at 1309 m is Ben Macdhui , also the second highest mountain in Scotland and Great Britain.
The River Dee and some tributaries of the Spey , namesake of the Speyside whiskey region, have their source in the Cairngorms .
tourism
Popular starting points for tours to the Cairngorms are Aviemore in the northwest, Pitlochry in the south and Braemar in the Dee Valley. The next larger cities are Inverness to the north, Aberdeen to the east and Perth to the south behind Pitlochry . In the Cairngorms there are a total of 3 of the 5 Scottish ski areas - Glenshee in the south at the foot of the Glas Maol , Cairngorm in the central part on the slopes of the Cairn Gorm and The Lecht in the east on a small pass road. In the Cairngorm ski area, the Cairngorm funicular is used as an ascent aid. It is Great Britain's highest cable car and the highest restaurant in the country is located in the mountain station.
