The Cairn Toul ( Gael. Càrn an t-Sabhail , dt barn hill) is the fourth highest mountain in Scotland and Great Britain at 1291 m , higher are only Ben Nevis , Ben Macdhui and Braeriach . The summit is the second highest point in the western section of the Cairngorms and is connected to the Braeriach by a saddle at 1125 m. The mountain rises west of the Lairig Ghru Pass.
The Cairn Toul is often climbed in conjunction with other peaks. From the south, the ascent to the summit can be combined with an ascent of The Devil's Point , which is about 2.5 km south-south-west. As an alternative to this route, the Cairn Toul can also be reached from the north, crossing Braeriach and Sgòr at Lochain Uaine , among others . According to Scottish standards, both routes are long day tours of around 15 km uphill - regardless of whether the climb is from Coire Cas in the Speyside or from the Linn of Dee in the south.
The mountain can also be reached by a route from the west starting from Achlean in the Glen Feshie Valley. This ascent is a slightly shorter route, a total of around 27 km must be planned for the summit tour. However, a vast, undulating high moor area has to be crossed in order to reach the Braeriach and Cairn Toul massifs.
The Corrour Bothy bivouac hut is located south of the Lairg Ghru pass, in the Dee valley, below the Cairn Toul .
