The Braeriach ( Scottish Gaelic Bràigh Riabhach / Am Bràigh Riabhach ) is the third highest mountain in Scotland and Great Britain at 1296 m , only Ben Nevis and Ben Macdhui are higher . The summit is the highest point in the western massif of the Cairngorms , separated from their central part with Ben Macdui and Cairn Gorm by the Lairig Ghru Pass . The summit is crescent-shaped with several amphitheater-like karen . The north-facing cirque of Garbh Coire Mor has only been completely free of snow five times in the last hundred years: 1933, 1959, 1996, 2003, 2006. The snow fields here are the most permanent firn fields in Scotland.
On the summit plateau, about one kilometer west of the main summit, the river Dee rises at an altitude of around 1220 m .
The normal route to the Braeriach begins at the Sugar Bowl parking lot on the road to the Cairn Gorm ski area. A trail leads over the mountain edge up to Chalamain Gap , a steep-sided notch , and from there about 100 meters down to Lairig Ghru . After crossing the pass, the summit ascent follows the northern ridge of the Braeriach, crossing the secondary summit Sròn na Lairige . The summit is about nine kilometers from the parking lot.
