Cairn Gorm (Gaelic: An Càrn Gorm , German blue hill ) is a mountain of the Grampian Mountains in the north-east of Scotland , which is counted among the 282  Munros . The group of mountains of the Cairngorms is named after the summit , as it appears to be the highest peak of the massif from the point of view of the lower lying areas in the north. However, this is the Ben Macdhui .

The easiest way to get to the summit of Cairn Gorm is from the parking lot at the valley station of the Cairngorm funicular . A hiking trail leads to the Ptarmigan mountain station (German: ptarmigan ). In winter, ski lifts also operate here.

Mountain hiking

In summer there are many mountain hikers here. The terrain is easy and there is only about 800 meters of altitude to be overcome from the valley station. The current weather data from the mountain station is displayed in the valley station. However, this area is notorious for the most violent weather changes. Six people died here in November 1971 in a sudden snow storm. But even in summer, violent storms and snowfalls can occur very suddenly.

Winter sports

One of five Scottish ski areas is located on the northern slopes of the Cairn Gorm. There are a total of 37 km of slopes, the longest has a length of 2.2 km. 16 ski lifts are operated here.

Ptarmigan mountain station

The mountain station can be reached with the funicular. She must not be left. This serves to keep the mass tourism that the Cairngorm cable car has triggered off the plateau. Only real mountain hikers should be able to reach the summit. This is an attempt to combine tourism and nature conservation.

At 1097 m, the mountain station contains the highest restaurant in Scotland. If the weather permits, you have a great view through the windows. There is also a shop and an exhibition. A weather station is also located here. It currently transfers the data to the valley station. For many visitors, however, the most exciting thing is the view from the small viewing platform.

The highest telephone box in the United Kingdom is also located at the top station. However, since the cell only made five calls in a year, the operator British Telecom announced in 2016 that it would close the phone booth as uneconomical.

Surroundings

The Scottish town of Aviemore is a popular starting point for hikes and skiing in winter .

The Cairngorms National Park is known for its unique flora and fauna .
