Cairngorm funicular
The Cairngorm Mountain Railway is a two kilometer long funicular at Cairn Gorm in Scotland and the highest railway in the United Kingdom . It is located in the Cairngorms National Park , the largest national park in Great Britain, near Aviemore , Highland .
A chairlift had been on the slopes of the Cairn Gorm since 1961, although it had proven to be very sensitive to wind. The new construction of the Cairngorm Mountain Railway by Doppelmayr began in 1999, the opening was on December 23, 2001. The railway is operated by the Cairngorm Mountain Limited and is owned by the Highlands and Islands Enterprise. Over a length of 1,970 m, the runway, which is 2,000 mm wide , manages a height difference of 462 m. There is an alternative point above the Sheiling middle station . Most of the route is designed as a concrete viaduct , the last 350 m is in a tunnel . The cable car is part of the ski area in winter and is used by hikers and tourists in summer .
