Braemar ( Scottish Gaelic Baile a 'Chaisteil ) is a village in the Civil parish Crathie and Braemar in Aberdeenshire , Scotland . It is about 93 kilometers west of Aberdeen in the Scottish Highlands . Braemar is the first major town on the upper reaches of the River Dee and is the unofficial capital of the Deeside .
On the first Saturday in September, the annual Braemar Gathering ( Highland Games ) takes place in Braemar , traditionally with the presence of the royal family .
The Gaelic Bràigh Mhàrr actually refers to the area of the upper Marr (in the literary meaning), i.e. the area from Marr west to Aboyne . The name of the village means “Castle of Braemar” ( Baile a 'Chaisteal Bhràigh Mhàrr ). In Braemar there is the Braemar Castle .
At the 1891 census, 59.2% of the population said Scottish Gaelic was their first language. The percentage of those who really mastered the language was probably much higher. The last native speaker of the local Gaelic dialect died in 1984. However, there are still speakers of the similar dialect from Strathspey.
The area around Braemar is dominated by Catholicism . St Andrew's bones were kept here before they were brought to St Andrews . The local Catholic Church has him as a patron saint.
