Aboyne ( Gaelic : A Beidh ) is a village in the Scottish council area of Aberdeenshire . It is located in the Deeside region about 45 km west of Aberdeen and 55 km north of Dundee on the left bank of the Dee . In 1971 Aboyne had 2602 inhabitants. Aboyne lies at an altitude of about 125 m. The A93 runs through Aboyne and connects the village to the trunk road network.

history

Aboyne was founded in 1670 as the Charleston of Aboyne after Charles Gordon , the then Earl of Aboyne . He also had the nearby Aboyne Castle rebuilt. In 1828 a bridge was built over the Dee, but it was destroyed by a flood the following year. The reconstruction lasted until 1831. O'er the Water to Charlie , a poem by Robert Burns , is dedicated to John Ross , who operated a ferry across the Dee before the bridge was built at this point. In 1853 Aboyne got its own station on the Deeside Railway line of the Great North of Scotland Railway , which ran from Aberdeen to Ballater . However, the line was closed in 1966. Tourism in Aboyne has been growing since the middle of the 19th century and the town is still characterized by a wide range of tourist offers. The Aboyne stone circle lies in a forest north of the Dee.
