Altnaharra ( gäl . : Allt na h-Eirbhe ) is a hamlet in the county of Sutherland in the council area of Highland in northern Scotland . It is on the A836 at the top of Loch Naver . The closest villages are Lairg and Tongue . In 2011, 37 people lived in Altnaharra.
The small town is known for the very exclusive Altnaharra Hotel, which opened in 1820 and is popular with hunters, anglers and mountaineers, as well as for the weather station of the Met Office .
