Altnaharra ( gäl . : Allt na h-Eirbhe ) is a hamlet in the county of Sutherland in the council area of Highland in northern Scotland . It is on the A836 at the top of Loch Naver . The closest villages are Lairg and Tongue . In 2011, 37 people lived in Altnaharra.

The small town is known for the very exclusive Altnaharra Hotel, which opened in 1820 and is popular with hunters, anglers and mountaineers, as well as for the weather station of the Met Office . Here, the lowest temperature ever was in on 30 December 1995 -27.2 ° C UK measured. Altnaharra shares this cold record with Braemar , which had the same temperature on February 11, 1895 and January 10, 1982. Furthermore, Altnaharra has the only gas station between the north coast and the places in the south, which is also operated by the Altnaharra Hotel.
