The Spey [ speɪ ] is a 173 km long river in Scotland . It rises in the Monadhliath Mountains of the Scottish Highlands and flows into the Moray Firth at Garmouth . The railway line and the road from Inverness to Perth follow the river valley in some sections. The temporarily raging mountain river flows through the villages:

The Spey is known for numerous whiskey distilleries on its lower reaches in the traditional counties of Morayshire and Banffshire . This region, the heartland of whiskey, is also called " Speyside " .

One of the four official national long-distance footpaths in Scotland, the Speyside Way , runs mostly along the river.
