Old Bushmills
The Old Bushmills Distillery (company name The “Old Bushmills” Distillery Co. Limited ) is a whiskey distillery in Northern Ireland . It is one of the oldest whiskey distilleries in the world with a tradition going back more than 400 years. The company is located in Bushmills , County Antrim . It belonged to the Diageo group from 2005 to 2014 , and from 2015 to the Casa Cuervo distillery group .
history
Whiskey or "Uisce Beatha" has been produced in Ireland since the 13th century. In 1608, King James I of England granted Sir Thomas Phillips an exclusive license to distill whiskey in County Antrim . In the 17th century, whiskey distilling was taxed in Ireland, and later even banned. Many illicit distilleries sprang up during this time . The Bushmills distillery was also in the hands of smugglers in 1743. In 1784 the distillery became legal. Up until then there were around five other distilleries in Bushmills. In 1784, Hugh Anderson registered the Bushmills Whiskey Company as an international trading company. Around 1900 the Bushmills brand became known in the United States and other countries. After the end of Prohibition in the United States , the huge demand that came from there generated profits.
The Diageo group bought Old Bushmills for £ 200 million in 2005 . At the beginning of November 2014, Diageo announced the complete transfer of the Bushmills brand to the Casa Cuervo distillery group by the beginning of 2015 as part of a counter-deal .

- Bushmills 12 “Distillery Reserve” - Specialty single malt Irish whiskey, only sold at the distillery
- Bushmills 16 - Single Malt Irish Whiskey, aged for 16 years in bourbon, sherry and port barrels (sold out since late 2015, to be reissued)
- Bushmills 21 “Madeira Finish” - Single Malt Irish Whiskey, aged for 19 years in bourbon and sherry barrels, then 2 years in Madeira barrels
- Bushmills Irish Honey - A blend of Irish single malt whiskey and Irish honey

- Bushmills Malt 1608 “Anniversary Edition” - special bottling for the 400th anniversary of the first official licensing for distilling whiskey in Ireland
- Bushmills Steamship (# 1) “Sherry Cask Reserve”

- Bushmills Steamship (# 3) “Bourbon Cask Reserve” - The Steamship Collection was launched on the 125th anniversary of the maiden voyage of the distillery's own steamship. The SS Bushmills delivered whiskey to new parts of the world.
The distillery also produces the following whiskeys with different names:
- The Irishman - single malt
- The Irishman 70 - Blend, produced with the Midleton distillery
- Knappogue Castle - single malt
- Clontarf - Blend together with Midleton
controversy
Bushmills distillery is considered the oldest licensed distillery in the world. This title is challenged by the Locke's Distillery , which was in operation from 1757 to 1957 and whiskey production resumed in 2007.
