Baileys is short for Baileys Original Irish Cream , the brand name of an Irish cream liqueur made from Irish whiskey and cream with an alcohol content of 17 % by volume . Baileys is part of the Diageo group.

history

An alleged namesake Andrew Bailey of the company RA Bailey does not exist despite numerous claims. As the British journalist Alicia Clegg has noted, it is a “cheat” for branding reasons .

In November 1974 the whiskey liqueur from IDV (Grand Metropolitan) was launched. The German market launch followed in 1979. Baileys is responsible for more than 50 percent of all spirits exports from Ireland and, with a market share of around 50 percent, is the global market leader among cream liqueurs.

ingredients

According to the manufacturer, Baileys consists of around 50% Irish cream . Another main ingredient is alcohol, including in the form of Irish whiskey. Added to this are sugar and a flavor mixture, the focus of which is a special recipe for a chocolate extract.

According to the manufacturer, no preservatives are added to the drink, as the alcohol content preserves the cream sufficiently. Every year over 275 million liters of milk, almost five percent of Irish milk production, are used in Baileys production.

variants

Since 2005, Baileys has been selling the Mint Chocolate and Crème Caramel varieties in addition to Baileys Original . After its success on the market, Coffee was added in 2008 . The Hazelnut variety has been available since February 2011 . In September 2011 the Biscotti variety was introduced in England. From October 2012 to January 2013 there was a limited edition Orange Truffle . This was only available on the travel market, but was reissued at the end of 2013 and is a regular product in the UK, for example. In 2013, the Mint Chocolate variety was discontinued. All varieties have a uniform alcohol content of 17 % by volume .

Adaptations

Several companies offer a Bailey-flavored product in their range, including Nestlé and Unilever ( Dublin Mudslide ) in the ice cream segment and Coppenrath & Wiese in the cake segment.

Others

The production date is indicated indirectly on all bottles. On the lower left half of the back is the manufacturer's recommended use-by date, which is two years after the date of manufacture. It consists of the month and the year.
