history

The Wolseley Sheep Sheering Machine Company Ltd. was founded by the Irishman Frederick York Wolseley in Sydney , Australia in 1887. It was the first company to make a mechanical sheep clipper. In 1889, Wolseley gave the patents to a new company that had its headquarters in London.

The future vehicle manufacturer Herbert Austin joined the company in Australia in 1888; he left Australia with Frederick York Wolseley in November 1893 and set up a factory in Broad Street, Birmingham , England. Austin made a significant impact on the company when Wolseley left the company in 1894.

Austin built a larger plant in Aston , Birmingham, and began making bicycles. In 1896, Austin designed the first Wolseley automobile, and model car production began. In 1901 the car division "Wolseley Tool & Motor Car Company Limited" was bought by Vickers . Austin then left the company in 1905 and founded his own company in Longbridge . In 1926 the Wolseley Motor Car Company was sold to William Morris, 1st Viscount Nuffield (see further company history in the article: Wolseley Motor Company ).

Herbert Austin had meanwhile returned to Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine Company Ltd. returned. The company continued to produce sheep clippers and other agricultural equipment.

In the 1950s, the company produced various agricultural vehicles. In 1958 the company merged with Geo H. Hughes, which manufactured tires. The company was renamed Wolseley-Hughes.

In the 1960s Wolsely-Hughes bought Nu-Way Heating Limited, which started the company transforming itself into a manufacturer of heating equipment for buildings. This product division developed into the subsidiary OBC. In 1965 Wolseley acquired Granville Controls and Yorkshire Heating Supplies, expanding OBC's offering.

1982 succeeded with the acquisition of the company Ferguson Enterprises , a distributor on the east coast of the United States. In 1992 Wolseley acquired the French company Brossette and in 2003 the Swiss Tobler Haustechnik .

In November 2010, for tax reasons, the company's registered office was relocated from Theale near Reading to Saint Helier on Jersey and the operational headquarters to Zug in Switzerland . In 2017 the company name was changed to Ferguson plc.
