St. Pauli Girl
St. Pauli Girl was one of the St. Pauli brewery CL Wilh. Brandt GmbH brewed beer in Bremen and is a beer brand for the US market.
history
The St. Pauli brewery was founded in 1857 by the Bremen entrepreneur Lüder Rutenberg . It was brewed in the former Runge brewery on Bleicherstraße in Ostertor. In 1862, Carl Ludwig Wilhelm Brandt became a partner. In 1864, the master brewer Heinrich Beck was hired, who later founded the Beck & May imperial brewery with Franz Gustav Thomas May . By 1870, the St. Pauli brewery rose to become the largest brewery in Bremen. Brandt was now the sole owner, as Rutenberg had left the company due to business and personal differences. As early as the 1880s, St. Pauli Girl became one of the most successful beers of the Bremen St. Pauli Brewery and won a total of twelve international medals. Even then, the brand's strength was the export of pale lager , especially to the United States. At the turn of the century, the brewery, which was now owned by an English stock corporation, also managed to gain a foothold in Great Britain .
In the time before the First World War , St. Pauli Girl was the most famous German export beer. In cooperation with Norddeutscher Lloyd , however, Beck & Co. managed to make the Beck’s brand synonymous with German beer in the United States, to displace other German beers from the export market and to take over the St. Pauli Brewery in 1918 after various changes of ownership.
St. Pauli Girl survived as a brand and was produced again in Bremen from 1965 and introduced as a warehouse and special dark in selected regions of the USA. National marketing began in 1975 using an illustration of a blonde woman in a dirndl on the label . Since the 1980s, the brand is the annual selection of a photo model for "St. Pauli Girl "advertised. At times, St. Pauli Girl was the second best-selling German beer in the United States and the non- alcoholic malt was even the best-selling non-alcoholic imported beer in the United States.
