Robert McCloskey

Robert McCloskey (born September 15, 1914 in Hamilton (Ohio) , † June 30, 2003 in Deer Isle , Maine ) was an American author and illustrator of children's books.

Life

McCloskey is best known for his portraits of New England. He wrote and illustrated eight books. The most famous among them is Make Way for Ducklings , which appeared in 1941 and was awarded the Caldecott Medal in 1942.

Make Way for Ducklings tells the story of a family of mallards who live on a pond in a park in Boston. The story is known to this day in Boston and is considered part of the city's heritage. In 2003, the story was named the Official Massachusetts Children's Book . In 1987, the sculptor Nancy created a bronze figure of Mrs. Mallard and her chicks, which is now in the Public Garden in Boston. The park is also the venue for the annual Make Way for Ducklings Parade, held on Mother's Day , which attracts hundreds of children in duck costumes.
