The Seasight class is a series of passenger ships that was built by the Norwegian shipyard Brødrene Aa for the Norwegian shipping company The Fjords . The ships were built entirely in lightweight construction and have alternative drive concepts (hybrid drive or purely electric drive).

The ships are 40 m long and 15 m wide. They have a capacity of 400 passengers. They were made entirely from composite materials with carbon fiber and synthetic resin by the shipyard . The hull of the ships was elaborately laminated in one piece with the help of a plywood mold made of carbon fiber and resin under vacuum . The superstructures consist of appropriately cut composite panels. With this production method, significant weight was saved, an important prerequisite for energy-saving ship operation.

The Vision of the Fjords , the first ship in the series built in 2016, has a hybrid drive consisting of two diesel engines with 749 kW each, which generate electricity via generators, and a battery pack with a capacity of 600 kWh. The generators and the batteries feed two electric motors with 150 kW each, which drive the propellers

The batteries are charged en route by the excess energy of the diesel engine and in the port by shore power. The water-cooled permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSM) can be operated as a generator or an electric motor, depending on the operating mode. The electricity collected in the batteries can therefore also be used as the sole source of energy when the diesel engine is disengaged. This enables a smooth and emission-free journey for around three hours.

The Future of the Fjords was built in 2018 in the same design as the Vision of the Fjords , but in contrast to this, it has a purely electric drive. It is driven by two 450 kW electric motors. At the jetty in Gudvangen there is a fast charging device called Power Dock , which can be used to charge the batteries of the Future of the Fjords in just 20 minutes.

The Legacy of the Fjords , the third ship in the series, is scheduled to enter service in 2020. Like the Future of the Fjords , it is powered entirely by electricity.

Areas of application

Both the Vision of the Fjords and the Future of the Fjords are used by the shipping company The Fjords (a subsidiary of the shipping company Fjord1 and the tourism company FLÅM AS) as excursion boats between Flåm and Gudvangen on the Aurlands and Nærøyfjords . The Nærøyfjord, together with the more northerly Geirangerfjord the World Natural Heritage site West Norwegian Fjords . Several daily departures are offered. A one-way trip between Flåm and Gudvangen, past 1,800 m high mountains, cascading waterfalls and typical settlements, takes about an hour and a half.

The Legacy of the Fjords will be used on the Oslofjord after completion.

Awards

Both the Vision of the Fjords (2016) and the Future of the Fjords (2018) were honored as Ship of the year at the Hamburg shipbuilding fair SMM .
