The Jackson Laboratory ( JAX ) is an independent American research institute for the genetic research of mammals with the aim of better understanding human diseases and thus being able to cure them. The organization is headquartered in Bar Harbor, Maine, with a branch in Sacramento, California.

The laboratory was founded in 1929 by the former President of the University of Michigan , CC Little , as the "Roscoe B. Jackson Memorial Laboratory" in Bar Harbor . The laboratory now employs over 1,400 people in genetic research, student training, and sharing of data and resources with research institutes around the world. The main subject of research is the house mouse ( Mus musculus ), which is used as a model organism due to its genetic similarity to humans (~ 95%). The laboratory established over 4,000 different mouse lines with a defined genome and is considered a global leader in mouse genetics.

Research priorities

The working groups of the Jackson Institute are divided into six main research areas:

  • Cancer research (brain, leukemia, lungs, lymph nodes, breast, cancer development and progression, early detection and therapeutic measures)
  • Developmental biology and biology of aging (birth defects, Down's syndrome, gender influence, aging, osteoporosis)
  • Immunology (HIV / AIDS, anemia, autoimmune diseases, butterfly lichen, rejection reactions of transplanted tissue)
  • Metabolic diseases (arteriosclerosis, diabetes, gallstones, high blood pressure, obesity)
  • Neurobiology (blindness, deafness, cerebellar defects, epilepsy, glaucoma, macular degeneration, neurodegenerative diseases)
  • Bioinformatics (mouse genome informatics, genome comparisons)

Since 1983, the Jackson Laboratory has been designated an official cancer research center by the National Cancer Institute , with the task of conducting basic research into the development, early detection and treatment of cancer.

Trivia

A total of 15 researchers have so far won the Jackson Laboratories Nobel Prize for research with mice. Among other things, the researchers Evans / Capecchi for the production of the knockout mouse by working with embryonic stem cells.
