Ferdinand Max Bredt

Ferdinand Max Bredt , signature FM Bredt (* 7. June 1860 in Leipzig , † 8. June 1921 in Ruhpolding ), was a German painter of Orientalism .

Life

Bredt first completed an apprenticeship in bookselling in Stuttgart . In 1877 he began studying painting at the Royal Art School there with Bernhard von Neher and Carl von Häberlin . In 1880 he switched to Wilhelm von Lindenschmit the Younger's at the Munich Academy . In the following years he developed a rich travel activity, which led him to Italy and Greece , Turkey and Tunisia , among others .

In 1892 he was a founding member of the Munich Secession . In 1897 he settled in Ruhpolding . The painter Eduard Bauer-Bredt became his son-in-law in 1919 and also lived in Ruhpolding.

Bredt created a series of harem scenes and odalisques , besides also landscapes and symbolic scenes in an academic embossed colourism . In his late work the brushstroke becomes looser and broader, his painting style more open and moderately modern.
