Rudolf II of Laon

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf (Latin Rudolphus , etc.; French Raoul II de Laon ; † after 948 ) was Bishop of Laon from after 936 to 948.

Life

Rudolf was a priest when he was elected by the clergy and people as the new bishop of Laon after 936 . During this time the city was the royal residence and a competitive place between King Ludwig IV and his rival Duke Hugo the Great of France . In 939 Rudolf was deposed by the king because he supposedly had opened the city to Hugo. After three years he was able to return to his office.

In 946 Rudolf was driven out by Hugo, who brought the city under his control. In June 948 Rudolf took part in the great synod of Ingelheim , where the power struggles between Hugo and Ludwig were to be resolved. Hugo should answer for the expulsion of Rudolf, was one of the resolutions of the synod. Rudolf also took part in the following synod in Trier in September (or October). His further fate is unknown. After the king retook Laon in 949, he was no longer mentioned.
