Earl of Darnley is a hereditary British title of nobility awarded twice in the Peerage of Scotland and once in the Peerage of Ireland .

First award

On August 5, 1581, the title was bestowed on Esme Stuart 1st Earl of Lennox . The award took place at the same time with the parent title Duke of Lennox , both in the Peerage of Scotland. He had already been raised to Earl of Lennox on March 5, 1580 . The titles expired with the death of the 6th Duke of Lennox in 1672.

Second award

On September 9, 1675, the title was bestowed on Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond . The award took place simultaneously with the parent title Duke of Lennox and the subsidiary title Lord of Torboltoun , all three in the Peerage of Scotland. He had already been raised on August 9, 1675 in the Peerage of England to Duke of Richmond , Earl of March and Baron Setrington in the County of York .

On June 29, 1725, the title was recreated in the Peerage of Ireland for John Bligh, 1st Baron Clifton . He had already been raised to Baron Clifton , of Rathmore in the County of Meath on September 14, 1721 and Viscount Darnley on March 7, 1723 , both in the Peerage of Ireland. His wife also carried the title Baron Clifton, of Leighton Bromswold in the County of Huntingdon , created on July 9, 1608 as Barony by writ in the Peerage of England , whereby his son, the 2nd Earl, united both baronies. In contrast to the Irish, the English title can also be inherited in the female line, which is why on October 31, 1900, on the death of the 7th Earl, the English baron title fell to Elizabeth Bligh, 17th Baroness Clifton , while the Irish title fell to Ivo Bligh, 8th Earl of Darnley passed over. After both deaths, their heirs Esme Bligh, 9th Earl of Darnley, 18th Baron Clifton reunited the titles. The title is currently owned by Adam Bligh, 11th Earl of Darnley .
