Lord Darnley
Lord Darnley was a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland that was awarded several times.
Awards
The title was first awarded to John Stewart in 1460 . This was raised to the Earl of Lennox in 1473 . At the death of his great-grandson, Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox , in 1571, his son Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, had already died, so the title fell to Henry's son, King James VI. , and merged with the Scottish crown.
In the second presentation of the title in 1562 was John Stewart (1532-1563) an illegitimate son of the Scottish king James V awarded. His son, the 2nd Lord, was made Earl of Bothwell in 1581 . The titles have been forfeited since 1592 when Francis was ostracized for murder.
In the third bestowal, the title was bestowed on April 18, 1572 to Charles Stewart , along with the parent title Earl of Lennox . The titles expired on his death in 1576 and were both newly created in the fourth award on June 16, 1578 for his uncle Robert Stewart . This waived the title in 1580 and was given the title Earl of March in exchange .
His nephew Esmé Stewart was awarded the titles of Earl of Lennox and Lord Darnley, Aubigny and Dalkeith on March 5, 1580 . On August 5, 1581 this was also elevated to Duke of Lennox , Earl of Darnley and Lord Aubigny, Dalkeith, Torboltoun and Aberdour . The titles expired with the death of the 6th Duke in 1672.
