Charles Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox (* 1557 in Rufford, Nottinghamshire , † 1576 in London ), was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family .

Charles was the fourth son of Matthew Stewart, 4th Earl of Lennox and his wife Margaret Douglas , and the younger brother of Henry Stewart, Lord Darnley .

Charles' mother was a niece of King Henry VIII of England and he himself was an uncle of King James VI. of Scotland , for which he also reigned. Since his older brother Henry had been murdered in 1567, the title of his father fell to James VI when he was murdered in 1571. and thus extinguished by merging with the crown.

In 1572 the titles Earl of Lennox and Lord Darnley were recreated in favor of Charles.

As a member of the royal family, his marriage required the permission of the Queen of England . Without this permission he married Elizabeth Cavendish (1555–1582), daughter of William Cavendish and Elizabeth Hardwicke , in 1574 , with whom he had a daughter:

The Earl died at the age of 20 and was buried in Westminster Abbey . In the absence of male offspring, his titles reverted to the Scottish Crown and were reassigned to his uncle Robert Stewart .
