Robert Stewart, 1st Earl of March (born around 1517 - † August 29, 1586 in St. Andrews , Fife ) was a Scottish nobleman from the Stewart family .

Robert was the younger son of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Lennox and his wife Elizabeth Stewart of Atholl.

He was the owner of the feudal barony of Torbolton and since 1543 Bishop-Elect of Caithness .

His great-nephew King Jacob VI. bestowed on him in 1578 the hereditary titles Earl of Lennox and Lord Darnley . On March 5, 1580, he renounced these titles in favor of the crown and received the titles Earl of March and Lord of Dunbar in return . The Earldom of Lennox was then reassigned to his nephew Esmé Stewart .

Robert was married to Elizabeth († 1595), daughter of John Stewart, 4th Earl of Atholl , widow of Hugh Fraser, 5th Lord Lovat († 1577) since 1579 . Because Robert was apparently unable to father, his wife divorced him on March 19, 1581 and married James Stewart, 1st Earl of Arran († 1596) on July 6, 1581 . Robert died childless in 1586.
