Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond KG ( December 9, 1764 - August 28, 1819 ) was a British nobleman , general and politician.

Life

Charles was the only son of Lord George Henry Lennox (around 1738-1805) and his wife Louisa Kerr († 1830). His father was the youngest son of Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke of Richmond (1701–1750).

In 1789 he joined the British Army and earned the rank of lieutenant colonel in an infantry regiment. From 1795 to 1798 he was aide-de-camp for King George III. In 1798 he was promoted to major-general , in 1805 to lieutenant-general and in 1814 to general .

From 1790 to 1806 he was a Member of the House of Commons as MP for Sussex . He retired from the House of Commons when he in 1806, upon the death of his uncle Charles Lennox, 3rd Duke of Richmond , whose peerage as Duke of Richmond , Duke of Lennox and duc d'Aubigny inherited and thus a member of the House of Lords was .

From April 1807 to August 1813 he was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland . He opposed all efforts to relax at least some of the laws discriminating against Irish Catholics . In 1812 he let Lord Bathurst , War and Colonial Minister, know that he would only remain at his post in Ireland "if nothing was done for the Catholics". In 1810 he was awarded the Order of the Garter .

During Napoleon's “Hundred Days” , he commanded the Allied reserve to protect Brussels from a possible French attack. Like his grandfather, he was a keen promoter of cricket .

In 1818 Lennox went to Upper Canada as Governor General . There he died the following year of rabies after a fox bite .

In 1789 he married Lady Charlotte Gordon (1768–1842), a daughter of Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon , with whom he had the following children:

Honors

The city of Richmond Hill in Ontario , Canada, is named after the Duke who is said to have passed through it in 1819, along with various other localities. The place Lennoxville and Richmond County in Nova Scotia also bear his name.
