Districts of Sherbrooke (Lennoxville is shown in blue) |
Lennoxville is an arrondissement or borough of Sherbrooke , Québec , Canada . It is located at the confluence of the Rivière Massawippi with the Rivière Saint-François and is about 5 kilometers south of downtown Sherbrooke.
Before January 1, 2002 was a separate city. On January 1, Lennoxville was added to Sherbrooke along with a number of other smaller towns. A referendum on June 20, 2004 that was directed against the entanglement did not achieve the required majority.
history
Although the Mallory family began building a square within the city limits as early as 1804, Lennoxville was first settled in 1819. The name was derived from Charles Lennox, 4th Duke of Richmond , who was Governor General of Canada at the time. Jefferson Davis , President of the United States of America during the Civil War, lived in Lennoxville for a short time after being arrested for treason and released in 1867.
One of the few Canadian monuments to the Vietnam War is in Lennoxville. It commemorates Daniel Bolduc, a resident of the city who served in the United States Army during the war and died in Vietnam in 1969.
administration
Mayor is David W. Price. The borough has one seat on Sherbrooke City Council and two seats on the local council.
language
Historically, Lennoxville emerged as an English-speaking community with a growing proportion of a French-speaking minority. Today the languages are almost evenly distributed. The French part makes up about 45.3% while English is spoken by 49.9% of the population. This makes Lennoxville the district of Sherbrooke with the largest number of English-speaking residents.
education
A number of Canadian educational institutions are located in Lennoxvolle, including Bishop's University , both colleges, Champlain Regional College and Bishop's College School, and Alexander Galt Regional High School. The number of residents in the city therefore increases significantly while the studies are in progress. Bishop's College School has the oldest indoor ice hockey arena in Canada.
Traffic routes
The two highways Quebec Route 143 and 108 connect Lennoxville with the surrounding communities. Use Autoroute 10 and Autoroute 55 to reach Montreal , Québec and the United States . The Autoroute 410 is to be expanded. It currently runs from the Université de Sherbrooke to Route 108 east of Bishop's University. The extension is intended to direct the transport traffic past the city center.
