Paul Comtois

Paul Comtois , PC (born August 22, 1895 in Pierreville , Québec , † February 21, 1966 in Sillery ) was a Canadian agronomist and politician . From 1957 to 1961 he was a progressive-conservative MP in the Canadian House of Commons and Mining Minister, then until his death Vice Governor of the Province of Quebec.

biography

Comtois studied at the Université de Montréal and graduated as an agronomist in 1918 . He worked on his family's farm in Pierreville. In 1935/36 he worked as the chief appraiser of the Canadian Agriculture Commission, then until 1957 as managing director of the Association of Cooperative Banks of the Province of Québec. At the community level, he worked part-time as sexton , president of the school council and president of the Volksbank. In addition, he was from 1948 to 1961 mayor of Pierreville and co-founder of the local agricultural cooperative.

As a candidate for the Progressive Conservative Party , Comtois ran for the general election in 1957 and was elected in the Nicolet-Yamaska ​​constituency; he was re-elected the following year. In the federal cabinet of John Diefenbaker he was minister for mining and technical appraisal for a little over four years until 1961.

Five days after his resignation, on October 11, 1961, Comtois was sworn in by Governor General Georges Vanier as Lieutenant Governor of Québec. He held this representative office for around four and a half years. He was killed on February 21, 1966 when the official Spencer Wood residence in the Parc du Bois-de-Coulonge was destroyed in a fire.
