Louis-Amable Jetté
Sir Louis-Amable Jetté , KCMG , QC (born January 15, 1836 in L'Assomption , Lower Canada , † May 5, 1920 in Québec ) was a Canadian politician , judge and legal scholar . From 1873 to 1878 he was a Liberal MP in the House of Commons , from 1898 to 1908 he served as Vice-Governor of the Province of Québec .
biography
Jetté studied law at the Université Laval in Montreal and was admitted to the bar in 1857. He worked in the offices of Senators Hector Fabre and Frédéric-Liguori Béique . As a candidate for the Liberal Party of Canada , he ran for the general election in 1872 and prevailed in the constituency of Montréal-Est against the Conservative Defense Minister George-Étienne Cartier . He was re-elected two years later.
In 1878, Jetté did not seek re-election and resigned as a MP, whereupon he was appointed judge of the Supreme Court of the Province of Québec. In the same year he took over a chair in civil law at the Université Laval . From 1890 he was dean of the law faculty of this university. Governor General Lord Aberdeen swore him in on February 1, 1898 as Lieutenant Governor of Québec. He held this representative office until September 15, 1908. He then worked again as a judge until 1911.
