Gilles Lamontagne

Joseph-Georges-Gilles-Claude Lamontagne , PC , OC , CQ (born April 17, 1919 in Montreal , † June 14, 2016 in Québec ) was a Canadian politician . From 1965 to 1977 he was mayor of Québec City . He was then until 1984 Liberal MP in the Canadian House of Commons ; during this time he headed the Ministry of Post and the Ministry of Defense . Finally, he served as Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Québec until 1990 .

biography

Lamontagne completed a degree in economics at the École des hautes études commerciales in Montreal . In 1941 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and was used as a bomber pilot in World War II . In March 1943, his plane was shot down in the Netherlands , after which he was taken prisoner by Germany . After his liberation in May 1945, he returned to Canada and ran a department store in the city of Québec for two decades . He was also the recruiting officer and chairman of the Rotary club section there .

In 1962, Lamontagne was elected to Québec City Council, and three years later was elected mayor. In addition, he was from 1974 President of the Association of Municipalities of the Province of Québec. He resigned in 1977 and stood as a candidate of the Liberal Party for a by-election in the lower house constituency Langelier, where he prevailed with two thirds of the vote. In both 1979 and 1980 he was re-elected with similarly good results.

In the federal cabinet of Pierre Trudeau Lamontagne was represented as Minister of Post from February 1978 to June 1979. After about half a year in the opposition, the Liberals reunited the government in March 1980. Lamontagne took over the Ministry of Defense and was this until August 1983. He retained his lower house mandate for seven more months. Governor General Edward Schreyer swore him in on March 28, 1984 as Lieutenant Governor of Québec. He held this representative office until August 9, 1990.
