Regis Labeaume
Régis Labeaume (born May 2, 1956 in Roberval , Québec ) is a Canadian politician and businessman . Since December 8, 2007 he has been mayor of Québec City .
biography
Labeaume studied sociology at the Université Laval . From 1980 to 1985 he was political advisor to Minister Jean-François Bertrand . He then went into the private sector and co-founded the mining company Mazarin , which he headed until 1993. He then headed an organization to support business start-ups, was also a board member of various other companies (including Hydro-Québec ) and consultant on the establishment of new companies in the Québec region. In addition, he was involved in various educational and cultural funding organizations.
Labeaume is a supporter of the independence of the province of Québec and is close to the Parti Québécois . His attempt to run as a candidate for the National Assembly elections in 1998 was unsuccessful. He was also unsuccessful in 2005 when he ran for the presidency of the local Renouveau municipal de Québec party . After the death of Mayor Andrée Boucher , Labeaume ran as an independent candidate for the early mayoral elections. On December 2, 2007, he was elected with 59% of the vote, and took office six days later.
His first term of office was marked by the extensive celebrations for the city's 400th anniversary in 2008, with dozens of events with international appeal (including the Francophonie summit). On November 1, 2009, Labeaume was re-elected with an overwhelming majority of 79.7% of the vote. A few weeks earlier, he had announced the construction of a new ice hockey stadium. The Center Vidéotron is being built next to the existing Colisée Pepsi ; after completion in September 2015, it will have 18,000 spectators. Behind the 400-million dollars expensive project puts the intent to become a team again National Hockey League to bring to Quebec. On November 3, 2013, Labeaume was re-elected for a third term, receiving 74.1% of the vote.
