The Center Vidéotron is a multifunctional hall in the Canadian city of Québec in the province of the same name . It is mainly used for ice hockey games , but also for other indoor sports and concerts. The Center Vidéotron opened on September 15, 2015 and has a capacity of 18,259 spectators for ice hockey games. The construction cost was 370 million Canadian dollars (about 250 million euros ). The Remparts de Québec venue is located on the ExpoCité exhibition center north of the city center, right next to the Colisée Pepsi .

Planning and construction

Construction work in June 2014

The construction of the Center Vidéotron goes back to the widespread desire to bring a team from the National Hockey League (NHL) back to Québec (in 1995 the Nordiques de Québec moved to Denver and renamed the Colorado Avalanche ). It was largely agreed that such a project would only be successful with a new arena, since the Colisée Pepsi, which had existed since 1949, no longer met the increased demands. Mayor Régis Labeaume officially presented the project on October 16, 2009. Labeaume and Jean Charest , the Prime Minister of the Province of Québec, announced on February 11, 2011 that the city and the province would each cover half of the costs, which were estimated at around 400 million Canadian dollars.

On March 1, 2011, Pierre Karl Péladeau presented the Quebecor group, which he led, as the future operator of the arena and likely owner of a new NHL franchise to be formed in Québec. The concrete planning began in the fall of 2011. As the site of the arena is certain that at the fairgrounds ExpoCite located Racecourse Hippodrome de Québec , which had been closed in the same year and was demolished 2012th The Center Vidéotron is therefore in the immediate vicinity of the Colisée Pepsi.

The groundbreaking ceremony took place on September 3, 2012. In addition to Labeaume and Peladeau, Prime Minister Pauline Marois and five former Nordiques players, including Peter Šťastný, were present . During the planning and construction period, the arena was given the provisional name Amphithéatre de Québec , and it was given the name Center Vidéotron (derived from the Quebecor group-owned mobile operator Vidéotron) on April 7, 2015. The main users are the Remparts de Québec , a team in the junior league LHJMQ . The official opening was on September 8, 2015, the first major event was a Metallica concert the following day.

The hope of a franchise agreement with the National Hockey League for a new team in Quebec was not fulfilled for the time being. The NHL awarded the franchise to Las Vegas in June 2016 . Quebec's application has been suspended.
