The National Assembly of Québec (French: Assemblée nationale du Québec ) is the legislature of the Canadian province of Québec . It meets in the Parliament building ( Hôtel du Parlement ) in the city of Québec .
The National Assembly has 125 members who are elected by majority voting in as many constituencies . The leader of the majority party or the strongest party is also the prime minister ( premier ministre ) and heads the government known as the executive council (conseil exécutif) .
The three main tasks of the National Assembly are enacting new laws, approving the state budget and overseeing the government.
history
The Québec National Assembly is one of the oldest surviving parliaments in the world. The Constitutional Law of 1791 created the Lower Canada Legislative Assembly , which began its work in 1792. It was dissolved in 1841 when the Act of Union 1840 came into force , which united Lower and Upper Canada into a single colony called the Province of Canada . The British North America Act divided the province of Canada into the provinces of Québec and Ontario .
The original Lower Canada Legislative Assembly was reinstated as the Parliament of Québec. This originally consisted of two chambers, the Legislative Council (Conseil législatif du Québec) as the upper house with appointed members and the Legislative Assembly (Assemblée législative du Québec) as the lower house with elected members. The government of Prime Minister Jean-Jacques Bertrand passed Law 90 in 1968, which dissolved the Legislative Council and renamed the Legislative Assembly the National Assembly.
