Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, 6th Duke of Richmond KG , PC (born February 27, 1818 in Richmond House , London , † September 27, 1903 in Gordon Castle , Morayshire ), was a British conservative politician .

Life

Charles was a son of Charles Gordon-Lennox, 5th Duke of Richmond , and his wife Caroline Paget. He attended Westminster School and studied at the Christ Church of University of Oxford , where he received a brief career as a cricketer completed. He then served as an officer in the Royal Horse Guards from 1839 and became a member of the House of Commons for Sussex West in 1841 . Here he belonged to the Conservative Party. 1842–52 he was adjutant at Wellington and 1852–54 at his successor Lord Hardinge .

In the course of his political career he became Privy Counselor in 1859 and also held the post of director of the Poor Law Board under Derby from March to June 1859 . He followed his father after his death (October 21, 1860) as Duke of Richmond , Duke of Lennox , Duc d'Aubigny and in other nobility titles and entered the House of Lords . From 1861 he was Chancellor of the University of Aberdeen until his death . After the Conservatives came back to power, he was awarded the Order of the Garter in 1867 . 1867-68 he was President of the Board of Trade and took over when his party resigned in December 1868 their leadership in the House of Lords. 1874-80 he served in the government of Benjamin Disraeli as Lord President of the Council , he was also Leader of the House of Lords from 1874 to 1876 , until Disraeli (as Lord Beaconsfield) was ennobled by Queen Victoria and performed this function himself. On January 13, 1876 he was raised as heir to his great-uncle Duke of Gordon and Earl of Kinrara . From 1879 he served as Lord Lieutenant of Banffshire . Under Prime Minister Salisbury he was again President of the Board of Trade from June to August 1885 and Secretary of State for Scotland from August 1885 to January 1886. In the second cabinet formed by Salisbury in July 1886, however, he no longer took office.

The Duke married on November 28, 1843 in London Frances Harriet (1824-1887), daughter of Algernon Frederick Greville, with whom he had the following children:
