List of Ministers for Scotland
The Scotland-Minister (Engl. Secretary of State for Scotland , Gaelic : Rùnaire Staite na h-Alba , scots : secretar o State for Scotland ) is a for Scotland responsible member of the Cabinet of the United Kingdom , which is appointed by the Prime Minister.
history
The office of Secretary of State for Scotland was first introduced between Scotland and England under the Act of Union 1707 . After the Second Jacobite Revolt , the office was abolished in 1746, and the representation of Scottish interests was subsequently the responsibility of the Scottish Lord Advocate . The office of Secretary for Scotland (and the associated Scotland Office ) was introduced in 1885 by the British Prime Minister Lord Salisbury .
The first incumbent was Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, 6th Duke of Richmond . The incumbent has been a member of the British Cabinet since 1892 . Since 1926 the Scotland Minister has again been designated Secretary of State for Scotland .
In 1997, the Scottish population voted overwhelmingly for its own Scottish Parliament , with limited powers within the UK. In 1999, therefore, many of the duties of the Scotland Minister were transferred to the then newly established office of First Minister of Scotland . The Scotland Minister is still a member of the British Cabinet . Des Browne filled the post mainly symbolically and was Secretary of Defense at the same time , while Jim Murphy was his successor only as Minister of Scotland. The current Minister for Scotland is Alister Jack, succeeding David Mundell .
